7 August 2009 - Woman's Day Hike at Glenburn Lodge

On 7 August 2009 all the learners of The Heritage School excitedly participated in a hiking activity at Glenburn Lodge.
We arrived at Glenburn Lodge at 08:00 and kicked the day off with a Woman’s Day celebration where each register class gave a small presentation on the amazing woman of the world like Oprah Winfrey, Mother Theresa, Diana Princess of Whales as well as Mary mother of Jesus.
The juniors chose to honour their mothers instead and presented their mommies with special art pieces! The official hike started at 09:15 two individual routes were attempted. The hike lasted approximately 2 hours and everyone reported to the activity field afterwards for some exciting games such as egg races, balloon popping, etc. Glenburn Lodge prepared a deliciously catered meal on the garden terrace which was well enjoyed by all. We took advantage of the many facilities Glenburn Lodge have to offer before settling down for a prize giving ceremony where the children each received a certificate of participation and achievement. Needless to say, the day was filled with laughter, fun and adventure!20 August 2009 - Kromdraai Gold Mine Visit
The grade 4 & 5 Learners went to the Kromdraai Gold Mine on Thursday, 20th August.
They were very excited and were pleasantly surprised by what they saw. They saw the two species of bats that co-exist in the tunnels. They were very intrigued by the fact that the whole area is bulit on a Reef. Our guide, Gavin was very informative and had a lot of stories to convey about the animals he has come across in the tunnels, eg. Snakes, porcupines, jackals, rodents and many others.
They saw the circumstances that the early miners worked under and how long it took them to get some gold out of the mine. The Kromdraai Gold Mine was one of the first gold mines on the Witwatersrand (the Johannesburg area today) and is situated in the serene Kromdraai valley in an unspoilt rural setting on a farm called Ibis Ridge. Gold was discovered here in Kromdraai in 1881 (5 years before the main reef was discovered in Johannesburg) by Johannes Stephanus Minnaar. The first government mining concession on the Witwatersrand was granted to Kromdraai Goldmine by the President, Paul Kruger

4 September 2009 - Spring Day!
On Friday, 4 September 2009, all our learners went to celebrate spring day with the elderly at the MOTH retirement home in Muldersdrift.
The children presented them with a small concert, showcasing our very special talent. They then presented the residents with gifts, hampers and specially hand crafted spring day cards. The children got to listen to some stories from the residents and explored the various old war tanks displayed on the premises. The day was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by all!
